Ingredients

  • 6 c. un-sifted flour (all-purpose is fine)
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 package (or 1 1/2 Tbsp.) dry yeast
  • 1 c. lukewarm water
  • 1/2 c. melted crisco
  • 1 1/4 c. cool water

Steps

1

Bread must rise 2 times- once in a large bowl and once in the loaf pan it is cooked in.

2

Mix flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.

3

Mix yeast and lukewarm water in a separate cup or bowl and let sit for 5-10 minutes.

4

Mix melted Crisco and cool water in a separate bowl.

5

Pour both liquids into dry ingredients and mix well. If using a mixer, mix until incorporated into a ball. Dough will be stiff. If mixing by hand, pour onto a well floured board and knead well until it stays together in a ball.

6

Put 3 Tbsp. of melted Crisco in the same large bowl. Grease bottom of dough. Turn over and grease other side. After dough is well greased, put in a warm place and cover with a dishcloth. Let rise for 2 hours or until doubled in size.

7

After first rise, knead down well. Pinch off balls of dough (roughly the size of a small orange, grease and place in the end of a greased loaf pan. Press against the end of the pan until about 1 finger width. Repeat until pan is full. Pat top of loaf with fingers dipped in melted Crisco. Cover with dishcloth and let rise 1-2 hours. (NOTE: the bread will continue to rise in the oven, so do not over fill your pan.)

8

Bake at 350* for 45 minutes or till brown.
